Two different machines
A heat pump is cheap to run and slow — days, not hours, and it stops working well once the air is cold. Gas heats a pool in an afternoon and costs real money every time it runs. Which one is right depends entirely on whether you swim all the time or on planned weekends.
A cover is half the job
Most of a heated pool's loss is evaporation off the surface overnight. Any heater works far better with something over the water.
